Your whole business depends on one connection

Most businesses treat their internet connection like the electricity supply. It is just there, until the day it isn't. The trouble is that a modern business runs almost everything over that one line: cloud software, email, card payments, file storage and increasingly the phones as well. When it drops, work stops.

One internet connection, however fast and however good the provider, is a single point of failure. Resilient connectivity is about making sure that when something breaks, and eventually something will, your business has another way online that takes over without anyone scrambling.

The real question is what an outage costs you

It is easy to treat resilience as an optional extra until you put a number on the downside. Work out what an hour with no internet actually does to your business, and the maths usually changes quickly.

For a busy office it means the whole team sitting idle, calls going unanswered, and customers being kept waiting or turned away. For anyone taking card payments or running a service desk, it is lost revenue by the minute. Then there is the less visible cost: the missed deadline, the client who quietly decides you are unreliable, the order that goes to a competitor instead. Once you know roughly what a bad day costs, the price of a second connection tends to look small.

Two lines only help if they fail separately

The obvious answer to a fragile connection is a second one, and it only works if the two don't share the same weakness. Two lines from the same provider, running down the same street through the same cabinet, will both go down the day a digger finds that cabinet. You have doubled your bill without buying much protection.

Genuine resilience comes from diversity. That means connections taking physically separate routes into your building, ideally from different carriers on different networks. It is more involved than ordering a second line, and it is usually the part that gets skipped, but it is what turns a backup on paper into one that is actually there when you need it. When you are setting it up, the things that matter are:

  • Separate physical routes into the building, not the same duct
  • Different carriers where possible, so one network's outage isn't automatically yours
  • Independent hardware, so a single failed router can't take everything down at once

Your backup options, from 4G to satellite

A backup connection doesn't have to match your main line for speed or cost. It has to keep the essentials running until the primary is restored, and the right choice depends on your site and your budget.

Mobile broadband over 4G or 5G is quick to add and works well as a stopgap for a small team. A second fixed line from a different carrier gives you more capacity and a properly diverse path. Satellite has become a serious option too. A service like Starlink comes down from the sky rather than through your local duct, so a fibre cut in your street doesn't affect it, which makes it genuinely path-diverse and a good fit for rural or hard-to-reach sites.

The one thing to be clear-eyed about with satellite is that this kind of service is usually best-effort, with no guaranteed uptime or fix time. That makes it an excellent backup, but not something to hang a customer contract on if that contract demands guaranteed service. For most businesses the sensible pattern is a solid primary line with one of these sitting behind it as the safety net.

Failover has to be automatic

Having a second connection is only half the job. What matters on the day is how the switch happens. If failover depends on someone noticing the problem and plugging something in, you have already lost time, and probably a few patient customers, before anything switches over.

A properly configured router, or an SD-WAN setup for businesses running more than one site, watches your connections and moves traffic across automatically when one degrades or drops, usually before staff notice anything. The better arrangements share the load across both lines day to day, so you are getting value from the backup rather than paying for something that sits idle waiting for a bad day. Active phone calls may drop at the moment of switchover, but new calls and everything else carry on.

Don't forget your phones

Connectivity resilience used to be only about data. That has changed. With the old analogue and ISDN phone network being switched off across the UK by January 2027, business phones are moving onto internet-based calling. It is a sensible move, but it means your phones now run over the same connection as everything else.

Once voice rides on your internet line, a connectivity outage is also a phone outage. Building resilience into your connection is what keeps the calls coming through when the main line is having a bad day, which is exactly when customers are most likely to be trying to reach you. If you haven't looked at how your business will handle calls after the switch-off, that is a conversation to have sooner rather than later.

Resilience is a decision, not luck

Staying online through an outage doesn't come down to good fortune. It comes from deciding in advance how your business keeps working when the usual connection fails, and putting that in place before you need it. Get it right and a cut cable or a failed cabinet becomes a quiet non-event rather than the day the whole team ground to a halt.
